Contraception/Birth Control

There are a variety of options when it comes to contraception/birth control.  It is possible to find one that is user friendly and appropriate for your needs.  Be informed that not all birth control options protect against both conception (getting pregnant) and STD (sexually transmitted diseases) and/or STI (sexually transmitted infections).  It may be that two forms of contraception will be more suitable depending on your sexual activity and that of your chosen partner.  This is because of the functionality of birth control.  Contraception works either one of two ways, by creating a barrier between the sperm and egg (ex. condoms) or by influencing the hormones in such a way that inhibits ovulation or the fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus (ex. birth control pills).  The methods that protect against the sharing of bodily fluids are those used to also protect against STD and STI.  No method of contraception is 100% effective for either conception or contraction of STD or STI.  Though when used properly and consistently birth control will be very effective.  Abstinence is the only way to prevent either pregnancy or STD/STI 100%.  Therefore, safe sex is the only way to be a responsible sexual partner.

Begin by talking to your regular healthcare provider about your options for contraception, or visiting the local health department for free and/or reduced cost care.

Kentucky River District Health Departments

It is the goal of the Kentucky River District Health Department to provide safe, appropriate family planning to those who need our assistance. This program is available  to all women of child bearing years.

We can provide:

• Physical exam by physician or nurse practitioner to include PAP and breast exam;
• Birth control supplies with counseling on methods; and
• Sliding scale fee if not Medicaid eligible

We ask that you call your county health department to make an appointment if you would like assistance determining which family planning method will work best for you.

You may also receive STD testing at the health department.

The Kentucky River District Health Department provides daily service to the general public.

Services include:

• Physical exam
• Lab Tests
• Free medication
• Referrals

These services are strictly confidential.  HIV TESTING IS ANONYMOUS AND CONFIDENTIAL.
